چکیده

Gradient-based meta-learning has been shown to be expressive enough to approximate any learning algorithm. While previous such methods have been successful in meta-learning tasks, they resort to simple gradient descent during meta-testing. Our primary contribution is the MT-net, which enables the meta-learner to learn on each layer’s activation space a subspace that the task-specific learner performs gradient descent on. Additionally, a task-specific learner of an MT-net performs gradient descent with respect to a meta-learned distance metric, which warps the activation space to be more sensitive to task identity. We demonstrate that the dimension of this learned subspace reflects the complexity of the task-specific learner’s adaptation task, and also that our model is less sensitive to the choice of initial learning rates than previous gradient-based meta-learning methods. Our method achieves state-of-the-art or comparable performance on few-shot classification and regression tasks.

An Effective Approach for Robust Metric Learning in the Presence of Label Noise

Many algorithms in machine learning, pattern recognition, and data mining are based on a similarity/distance measure. For example, the kNN classifier and clustering algorithms such as k-means require a similarity/distance function. Also, in Content-Based Information Retrieval (CBIR) systems, we need to rank the retrieved objects based on the similarity to the query. As generic measures such as ...

Boosted Sparse Non-linear Distance Metric Learning

This paper proposes a boosting-based solution addressing metric learning problems for high-dimensional data. Distance measures have been used as natural measures of (dis)similarity and served as the foundation of various learning methods. The efficiency of distance-based learning methods heavily depends on the chosen distance metric. With increasing dimensionality and complexity of data, howeve...

Lifelong Metric Learning

The state-of-the-art online learning approaches is only capable of learning the metric for predefined tasks. In this paper, we consider lifelong learning problem to mimic “human learning”, i.e., endow a new capability to the learned metric for a new task from new online samples and incorporating previous experiences and knowledge. Therefore, we propose a new framework: lifelong metric learning ...

Instance Specific Metric Subspace Learning: A Bayesian Approach

Instead of using a uniform metric, instance specific distance learning methods assign multiple metrics for different localities, which take data heterogeneity into consideration. Therefore, they may improve the performance of distance based classifiers, e.g., kNN. Existing methods obtain multiple metrics of test data by either transductively assigning metrics for unlabeled instances or designin...

Expert Gate: Lifelong Learning with a Network

For all the different alternatives, we use the adaptive gradient in the training of the autoencoder. Table 1 shows the classification accuracy for the task labeling problem achieved by each of the different choices and our Expert Gate autoencoder. It can be noticed that the linear gate (Linear Autoencoder) fails to recognize the examples from the Flowers dataset – the linearly learned subspace ...
